Lānaʻi Girls Flag Football Plays First Home Game in Program History

Saturday, March 28, Lānaʻi High & Elementary School’s girls flag football team played its first home game ever, now in its second year as a program.

“We were battling the weather elements, but we were able to come through and win,” head coach AJ Garbin said.

Rain came down through part of the game, and Lānaʻi defeated Hana 45–0.

An additional game had originally been scheduled for Friday afternoon, but Hana was unable to make the trip in time after a bus breakdown on the way to Māʻalaea Harbor. Earlier games in the season had been postponed when Kona storms hit the islands on consecutive weekends, leaving the team without competition despite months of practice.

“The girls were kind of itching to play,” AJ said.

Eighteen players are on this year’s roster, giving the team enough depth to rotate and stay active through games.

Next week shifts the focus back to schedule and progression. Lānaʻi will face Kulanihakoi on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. Friday’s game will serve as the final home game of the season and aloha seniors. Both games will be played on the football field below the pool, aka the “deer pen.”
